Why Rest Days Can be the Best Days
Ahhhh the often dreaded rest day! Why is it that everyone else seems to be posting about their epic runs and rides on the one day you’re NOT supposed to be out there? Rather than feeling like a spare part on your rest day, here are some tried and tested ways to make the most of your rest days:
▪️ Have a relaxing walk - turn your phone on airplane mode to avoid being distracted if want to really immerse yourself in your surroundings!
▪️ Read a book about an inspiring sportsperson - some of my favourites are ‘Born To Run’ (Christopher McDougall), ‘Let My People Go Surfing’ (Yvon Chouinard) and ‘Can’t Hurt Me (David Goggins)
▪️ Watch a documentary or film about a sport that you’re interested in. A few that I always recommend are ‘View from a Blue Moon’ (surfing), ’The Barkley Marathons’ (running) and ‘Alright Butt’ (Welsh mountain biking)
▪️ Have a good soak in the bath. Add bath salts or @joovsports spray, press play on that podcast you’ve been meaning to listen to and relaxxx
▪️ Do a gentle yoga flow to release any tension in body and mind - I love Yoga With Adrienne, as she has some great YouTube vids called ’Stretches for runners’
▪️ Cook a nutritious meal with a great balance of carbs, fat and protein to help your body recover and repair ready for your next training session
