Why we love Welsh sea salt
It's well known that our bodies lose salt during exercise, but this is so much more than a way to cool us down. Salt regulates water content both inside and outside of cells, creating an electrolyte balance and increasing hydration. It also helps to regulate nerve function and muscle contraction, as low sodium levels can lead to dehydration and muscle cramps (which I'm sure we've all experienced at some point!).
When I first started formulating VALA, I planned to use Himalayan pink sea salt in our gels. However, during the development process a friend told me about the process of mining pink salt and the fact that it's actually a finite source, which I had never realised before. This gave me the motivation to find something a little closer to home to use in VALA. That's when I discovered the award winning Halen Môn sea salt from Anglesey in North Wales @halenmon!
When researching Halen Mon, I'd read countless reviews from chefs and customers of how unique the flavour of their salt was - many people said it has a unique 'tangy' flavour that they'd never experienced before. I also discovered that it's used in some of the world's top restaurants, was served up at the 2012 London Olympics and has even been enjoyed by Barack Obama! After such glowing reviews, I decided to give this 'Welsh gold' a go in our test gels and fell in love with the flavour. Having found the perfect salt for VALA, I also felt very grateful to be able to support another Welsh independent business with the sale of each gel.
