Why having a 'growth mindset' is your secret weapon

Why having a 'growth mindset' is your secret weapon

Sometimes it’s ok if not everyone “gets” your idea to finish a triathlon, become an ultra runner or sign up to a couch to 5k. I’ve come to realise that that’s their own version of reality - not yours! YOU get to decide how hard you work towards your goals or how much you REALLY want to make that vision in your mind a reality.

From the moment I had the idea for VALA, I knew that I would jump through hoops not to add any artificial ingredients or preservatives to the formula. As someone that was new to the food industry, I had countless factories and manufacturers tell me that this wasn’t possible. However, I knew that it would be possible to make these gels a reality.

Along my journey, I met a handful of people in the sports nutrition world that really believed in the VALA brand mission. They very generously shared their advice and insight as to how we could make this gel a reality together. Looking back, I know it was the sheer determination and persistence that paid off. I had the mindset that “This WILL happen against the odds”. I didn’t know HOW, I simply knew that it WOULD happen and that I could “Learn on the job”.

I remember reading “Mindset” by Dr. Carol Dweck during this time and being so inspired by the concept of a “Growth mindset” vs a “Fixed mindset”. The idea is that we are always in possession of one of these two states and that we can train our brain to be more optimistic. A growth mindset embraces challenges and is always looking for opportunities to learn and improve. To put it simply, if you go for a run and fall over, are you going to pick yourself up and carry on with even more determination to finish or are you going to stomp home and resolve never to run again?

When planning a new venture that seems "impossible", a growth mindset person would have the attitude of “Nothing ventured, nothing gained” and would want to see if they could achieve their goal, whereas a fixed mindset person would say “Nothing ventured, nothing lost”.

A growth mindset encourages change, challenge and learning. Those with this mindset rework life’s setbacks into future successes and experience the benefits of persistence and resilience along the way! 🙌🏻
