Why you need a great physio
I know it might seem like VALA is all about the trails, but our gels can often be seen making a sneaky appearance at the gym! Here’s amazing physio Mitch from @elite_performance_therapy using VALA in the gym before his treadmill sprint training.
If there’s one thing I could tell my younger self when I started my exercise journey, it would be to schedule regular physio appointments and make stretching a priority. I was arguably a lot less committed to stretching and cooling down when I first started running and doing HIIT exercises. The result? I’d find myself getting stuck in a cycle of injury > physio > promise that I’ll commit to stretching > slowly forget about said stretching > repeat! Every few months I’d get a different injury and be panic dialling poor Mitch to save the day.
However, working regularly with an experienced physio like Mitch was an absolute game-changer. I’ve learned so much from him about how my body moves, where my weak spots are and how I can improve my strength with specific exercises and techniques. It’s so much more than a “sports massage”, which is what comes to most people’s minds when thinking of physio.
It might feel a bit more difficult to make regular physio appointments with a busy schedule, so you can try incorporating a sport-specific stretching routine into your cool down (I love “runner’s yoga” by Yoga with Adrienne on YouTube). Foam rolling is also ideal for reducing soreness and knots.
If you’re based in the London area and are looking for an incredible physio with heaps of knowledge and experience, definitely get in touch with Mitch!
