Chia seeds - small but mighty!

Chia seeds pack a powerful nutritional punch and are well-loved for their ability to provide sustainable energy. They were a popular staple food with the Aztecs and Mayans and 'chia' is the ancient Mayan word for 'strength'.

They also create a 'gel-forming' action, which slows the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar and makes them ideal for sports. They're an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, are rich in antioxidants and provide iron and calcium. These small black seeds can be added to smoothies or used as a porridge topping to add extra protein, healthy fats and fibre to your diet.

If you're not a fan of the texture of whole chia seeds, try using milled or powdered chia seeds instead. We use powdered chia in our gels as they help to give a smoother texture and don't leave a 'gloopy' feeling in your mouth.

You can use chia at home to make a 'chia pudding' by soaking 2tbsp of chia in 1/2 cup of your favourite milk and adding your sweetener of choice (maple syrup or VALA are our faves). Top with your favourite fruit and you have the perfect on-the-go breakfast or snack that's sure to keep you fuelled up during your next run or ride!
