Acts of kindness
During times like these, it’s so moving to see the compassion and support that we are able to provide each other. From posting “I’m here to help” slips through neighbours’ doors to doing food collections for the elderly, these small gestures offer significant reassurance to others.
As a small business owner, I’ve seen a whole different angle to the COVID-19 pandemic. Friends with small businesses and local businesses that I follow all have their own way of dealing with this unexpected turn of events whilst still paying their lease, mortgage and staff. Whilst some businesses have closed up shop in the hope that this will enable them to cut their losses, others have no choice but to keep their doors open until they’re told not to, in order to stay afloat. With government guidelines being constantly updated, we are all taking it step by step and adapting to a change of daily life.
Since moving back to South Wales, I have come to love the diversity of our local cafes, venues and independent shops and will do everything possible to help support them during this time. I’ve seen some great posts online with ways to support local businesses. These range from buying a gift voucher at restaurants and beauty salons that can be used at a later date, to continuing to pay for pre-paid lessons or classes that can be attended later on. Every little helps, whether that’s ordering food online to collect and eat at home or sharing posts from a local shop that’s still trading - albeit online only.
Starting a business is scary at the best of times, but the current state of affairs has added another layer of uncertainty to this leap into the unknown. I’m sure with our national determination, we will pull together to help each other overcome this with kindness, resilience and understanding.
